russia-today headerAs the Arctic sea ice melts away at an alarming rate, access to vast oil reserves is opening up – and countries bordering the region are determined to defend their slice of the pie. The polar seabed may hold as much as 15 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil – and 30 per cent of its gas. But as RT’s Marina Portnaya found out, the battle for the region could take a dangerous turn.

The way to avoid otherwise inevitable conflict in the Arctic would be to turn the region into a Nature Reserve under the auspices of the UN, where military and resource extraction is expressly forbidden.
